WOYWW: The Altered Book Project and Seashell Patterns

Here's a peek at my workdesk today...

with the book that I am preparing for the altered book class with Elizabeth, the Altered Book Lover.  No, I have not read this "Handbook of Chromatography."  I actually got it for free from a second hand bookshop and I chose it from among other books because it seemed like a good book to alter.  I have started to take out some pages.

And here is a laser cut x-ray slide that I was hoping to make into a little lamp.  The patterns are from my daughter's Fine Arts thesis which is all about "Fractals and Patterns from Seashells Applied as Graphic Elements."

She got patterns from seashells and is making a pattern book for designers.  I'm trying to help her develop some products to show that the pattern book is usable.  More of the patterns peeking out from a  folder...

And here is a little Valentine's box that one of the inmates in the Quezon City Jail gave me.  It is made from telephone directory pages with red cellophane trim.

For a peek at some other desks joining What's on Your Workdesk Wednesday, visit Julia and in case you are interested, check out my post about Valentine's Day in China.

Hi Peggy
Great things to spy on and I love those stencils and the heart box is amazing. It looks like the paper is rolled up on the box. So effective and quite a special gift.

Hello Ms. Peggy,

It's Tuesday evening here so I'm getting a jump on visiting! I have a post ready for midnight my time! hee hee

Your daughter's thesis sounds really interesting. There's all kinds of things that could be made using the shell patterns. Quilting comes to mind immediately, although I'm not one and don't need another craft! (Although I do have a small stash of fabric, it's just so pretty).

Hugs,
Kay

First, thanks for the kind words about my AB class. I thought of you and Peggy specifically when I wrote that gesso is hard to find outside the US. I remember you telling me that once. That's why I'm trying to find some cheap alternatives.

I am in love with those sea shell x-ray slides. They would make great stencils. I would also like to read your daughter's thesis. It sounds very interesting, since I was a math, physics, science geek in a previous life.

Love that heart box. You have been blessed. Have a great WOYWW from #9, but you knew that!

SO, SO sorry. I meant to say "you and PATSY." My brain was thinking at a different speed than my fingers were typing.

Pretty little box! I have a picture frame made using the same technique from one of the inmates in NE Provincial Jail, my Dad's godson. So sturdy, I have it for years!

Happy WOYWW!

I have been hoarding my old x-rays and any one elses who is prepared to give them up as they are great for stencils. x-rays are now sent directly to the doctors or put on a cd...how the world has changed...no more pieces of plastic for us crafters to use. nice designs too.

What a neat Valentine box! Such a great use for phone books-certainly they aren't useful for looking number up in! The cut up Xray sheet is very nifty looking and will be a fun lampshade. Great looking patterns peaking out there!

You have some great things. Your daughter is very talented and the thesis sounds very interesting. I love fractals, have looked at them many times but seem too hard for me.
Love the valentines box, very clever to use paper etc.
